Product Review: Best-Vet for Equines
by Deborah Powell
The Best-Vet is a sophisticated microcurrent device with four programs to choose from. These programs are labelled Chronic, Vet Mode, Acute, and Massage. A owner’s manual with basic instructions comes with the unit, but as always I and my fellow horse owners and therapists chart our own course to get the results we’re looking for. For one we it’s not practical for multiple daily treatments as suggested in the owners manual so this is a review of how we use the Best-Vet.
We prefer to start with the Chronic setting. The Chronic program has the biofeedback feature. It also is the “softest” in that it maintains a low level of frequencies. The Chronic program can help you locate areas of concern or confirm what you know is a problem area. For example, if you know the horse tends to be tight in the right side of his neck treatment can be started there first. The Best Vet is shown here being gently applied with the comb electrode. The Best-Vet in Chronic mode advises of tissue deficits with a series of beeps all the while delivering treatment. Often, pain is significantly reduced in the very first session. Trained eyes can see the improvement in tissue quality that continues for a couple days. In fact, in our experiences so far the most dramatic changes take place after several days when not only the site is treated but the opposite side also.
The Massage program is nice for working a larger section for general soreness. For the person giving the treatment and horse receiving the comb electrode is also the ideal for ease. Another method is to use the Best-Vet’s sliding technique. You can “feel” for where the plate sticks and spend more time there.
The Vet Mode is for edema and swelling and the Acute is for fresh injuries. The Best-Vet is not used directly on lacerations or abrasions but used around the area to expedite healing and reduce pain. Microamperage also helps to prevent the formation of weaker scar tissue and proud flesh.
The unit itself is an electrode, plus you can use pads like a traditional TENS units and other accessories.
For the already initiated to microcurrent the Best-Vet is a uniquely different experience. It has a tingling sensation like lower settings of TENS milliamps devices with a twist. In the micro current family of offerings there really is nothing quite like it. Each setting makes its own particular noises (unlike what we hear using a Precision, MENS, Electroacoustics, or Acutron Mentor) that I could only hear when experimenting on my own neck and shoulder.
